Pensions organisations

Jane Curtis has become the first woman president of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, taking over from Ronnie Bowie who becomes immediate past president, while Philip Scott becomes president elect.

Jane has been with Hewitt for the entirety of her career and is currently a managing partner with the firm.

Susan Smith, newly arrived at Pi Consulting as joint head of consulting and trustee services, and Paul Couchman, managing director at Premier Pensions Management, have been elected as vice presidents of the Pensions Management Institute.

Carol Knight, TISA (Tax Incentivised Savings Association), head of member services, is to join its board of directors.

The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS) has made six volunteer advisers Fellows of TPAS in recognition of their outstanding service. They are Alan Bennet, Wally Burgess, Clive Campion, Frances Corbett, Colin Liddell and Paul Meins.

TPAS also announced that Nathan Robinson of JLT Benefit Solutions has been awarded the title of “Adviser of the Year” 2010/11. He has been a TPAS adviser for four years and handled close to 50 cases. Nathan was nominated by his regional organiser who has been consistently impressed by his approach and by staff at TPAS.


Consultants

Mercer has appointed Martine Ferland, who joins from Towers Watson, as head of its retirement, risk and finance business for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Federica Gazzelloni moves to Bluefin Corporate Consulting as an actuarial analyst in their actuarial team from Mandeville Group.

The South West firm of independent pension advisers, BBS Consultants & Actuaries, has promoted Karina Snook to administration team leader.


Regulatory

The Financial Services Authority has appointed Liz Barclay, a journalist; Jayne Nickalls, former chief executive of Directogov; and David Weymouth, former chief information officer for Barclays, as non-executive directors of the board of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.


Law firms

Sacker & Partners has recruited a further three solicitors: Anna Copestake (who joins from Jones Day), Katy Harries (who moves from Slaughter and May) and Lauren Vose (Allen & Overy).


Administration systems

ITM, the specialist data, administration consulting and systems provider, has made two senior appointments: Dominic Hirons joins from Mercer as head of systems development and Tim Rees joins as senior consultant from SAUL Trustees Company.

Star movers

Mark Hyde Harrison to head NAPF

Mark Hyde Harrison has been elected as the next chairman of the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF). He will succeed Lindsay Tomlinson whose two-year term of office ends at the NAPF annual general meeting in Manchester on 21 October 2011.

Mark Hyde Harrison is chief executive of the Barclays UK Retirement Fund, a fund with 250,000 members and assets of over £19bn. He has been a member of the NAPF Investment Council since 2006 and currently is its vice chairman. Mark also serves on the NAPF Board and its Audit and Risk Management Committee.

Mark joined Barclays in 1988 and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and a graduate of the University of Nottingham with a degree in mining engineering.


PMI elects Susan Andrews as president

Susan Andrews has been elected as the new president of the Pensions Management Institute, succeeding Mike Sullivan.

Susan was elected to the PMI Council in 2001, becoming vice president in 2010, chairing its membership committee and acting as a trustee of the Institute’s own pension fund. Susan is a director of Trustee Solutions and a pensions partner at Pinsent Masons. She is also a committee member of the Independent Pension Trustee Group.
