Star Moves
TPR gears up for 2012 and auto-enrolment
The Pensions Regulator (TPR) has made several senior appointments.
June Mulroy (formerly executive director of business delivery) is the new executive director for defined contribution (DC), governance and administration.
Stephen Soper (formerly head of risk and funding) will be interim executive director for defined benefit (DB) funding.
Charles Counsell (formerly employer compliance programme manager) will be interim executive director for employer compliance, leading TPR’s work helping employers prepare for their new duties under auto-enrolment from 2012.
TPR’s chief executive Bill Galvin said the changes would enhance the Regulator’s ability to address the challenges of regulating DB funding, DC schemes and auto-enrolment.
Wheatley to head FCA
Martin Wheatley is the new managing director of Financial Services Authority (FSA) Conduct Business Unit. The appointment is effective from
1 September 2011 and at that time he will also join the FSA board.
Martin Wheatley is also confirmed as the CEO designate of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), one of the two successor regulatory bodies that will be formed out of the FSA in 2012.
Martin joins the FSA after a five year term as CEO of Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission.
Pension schemes
RSA has appointed Sankar Mahalingham as head of group pensions. Sankar will be responsible for driving pension strategy globally across the group. He joins from Towers Watson, where he was a senior consultant.
Civil Service
Jane May has been appointed as a non-executive director to the board of the Government Actuary’s Department (GAD). Her wide range of experience includes spells at Thames Water Utilities and Sears Group.
Colin Wilson steps up to the post of technical director on l April and will join the GAD management board as an executive member.
Consultants
PwC has expanded its pension department (now numbering over 400 people in the UK) with three more hires. Richard Setchim, partner, has joined the pensions credit advisory team, while David Brown has joined the pension team as partner and Simon Wasserman joins from the Pensions Regulator.
Xafinity Consulting has promoted Bill Holmes to head its UK investment consulting practice. He joined the firm in 1993.
Ian Catchpole has joined Mercer as southern manager for the client service management team in its outsourcing business. Ian previously worked for International Financial Data Services, where he was a senior business development analyst.
John Sansone is the new head of pensions at Enrich. With 30 years’ experience, John was previously practice manager at Towry Financial Services.
Independent trustee
Former Pensions Management Institute vice president, Brian Critchell, has joined the board of PAN Governance. Brian was previously a European partner at Mercer where he was also a trustee of several pension schemes.
Law
Sacker & Partners has hired as a solicitor Tom Jackman, who joins from Slaughter and May.
Trade association
John Reeve, chief executive of Family Investments, is the new chairman of The Association of Financial Mutuals, which represents 57 mutual insurers and friendly societies. John takes over from Mike Yardley, who stepped down as chief executive of Royal London last year.
SIPP/SSAS providers
David Fox becomes director of sales and marketing at Dentons Pension Management. He has over 20 years’ experience in the pension industry, including posts at Winterthur Life, Standard Life and Suffolk Life.
Rowanmoor Pensions has appointed Matthew Robinson as senior sales consultant for the southern region.
